“Special quality is required here”

Meissl Schirme Dorfkrug Kampen Bar & Grill Sylt Terasse

Terrace with Meissl Umbrellas , Dorfkrug Kampen, Sylt.

From alpine summits to the North Sea Island, from the winter season in Lech am Arlberg to summer business in Sylt – for Vorarlberg resident and gastronomy professional Thomas Samson, it took a long time for the usual annual planning, not least because of his yearning for the sea. Then he went to Bali, where he settled for a while and learned the high art of knife forging from the last master of those very special “Damascus” blades. In Bali, this art has great traditional significance with special ceremonies and is even part of a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. But in the meantime, Thomas Samson has come back to Sylt and his original work.

The concept of his “Dorfkrug” restaurant in Kampen is no less unusual or precise than his blacksmithing. The new specialty of this tradition-rich bar & grill: guests compile their menu individually; meat, side dishes and sauces can be combined to suit each taste with complicated special requests and mixtures being planned from the beginning and do not slow down the operating procedures like before. There were also good reasons for the creative host to choose Meissl umbrellas for the outdoor bar in front of the building. “People just want to sit outside but the stormy North Sea climate requires exceptional quality facilities.” Thus the open-air area becomes an extended arm of the offerings and provides weather protection for guests and staff alike. Experience also confirms this: “I was there when the very first Meissl umbrella was installed here on Sylt!”.
